Last week, ABC’s Australian Story told the inspirational story of a young girl called Tara Winkler who set off on an overseas holiday and ended up staying on for a while longer to volunteer in an orphanage in Cambodia.

At age 22 she returned to establish her own orphanage, the Cambodian Childrens Trust, leaving behind a promising career in the film industry to become a mum and mentor to 27 children.

It’s an amazing story of an incredibly brave girl. As one of her supporters said “she’s found her purpose in life, and she’s found it at the age of 23”

But what is even more inspiring is that she found the courage and determination to follow it through

I am curious to know about you.   What’s your big  picture purpose and do you have the courage to go the distance?

I am not saying that you should drop everything, move countries and open an orphanage (unless of course, that’s what you really want to do, then you should go right ahead and do it)

It might be to create beautiful art, to open a shop that sells fresh local produce, to be a leader, to design amazing houses, to provide quality child care, to teach, to cook delicious wholesome food for others…..

Perhaps take some time to have a little think, to ponder and reflect….

What gives you a zing of energy, a burst of excitement every time you think about it?   In that hazy window between sleep and awake what calls to you?  What are the gifts that you have to offer the world?

What would you do, if you could do anything? And what would it take to make the first step?

Please take the time to check out the Cambodian Childrens Trust website.   It’s a very worthwhile cause

And if you missed the program you can still catch it on ABC iview for the next few weeks.

The 1st thing you should know when setting up your online business

April 6th, 2010

In this series I would like to share with you the four most valuable gems I learnt about setting up an online business.

1. Be Authentic

Authenticity is the new black of marketing.  There is this whole new world out there (new for me anyway!) called Web 2.0 and online social networking.  People want to connect and they are doing it all over the place like on Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin.   And they want to connect with real people and the easiest way to be real is to be yourself and be authentic.  Just be who you are and do what you do best.

This raised a few big questions for me including the big  ”who am I anyway?” .

I found out that I am not the same person I was pre – baby.  My priorities are different now.  My life is deeper, richer and has more creativity and meaning and my world view and perspective on life has changed.

How finding my authenticity has helped me

Asking myself some really big questions sent me on a journey of self discovery, connecting me back into the core of who I am, my true authentic self.    Knowing what I need in my life to feel fulfilled and happy has given me the freedom to live life in alignment with what is MOST important to me and it resonates through all areas of my life – not just my work.

I wonder where you are with this?

Are you authentic in the way you connect with people?  Do you know what gifts you have to offer?   What do you do best?  Are you true to yourself?

For a start, you might like to try this simple exercise to help you connect back in the core of the person you truly are:

Take 10 sheets of paper and at the top of each one list all of your different roles in life eg mother, sister, friend, cook, gym junkie, holiday maker, cook etc and then write down what you like MOST about each one.  What most excites you about your different roles?  Are there any commonalities?  What core values can you see emerging?

I would love to hear how you get on….

Welcome!

Welcome to my blog which is all about helping you  design new ways of living and working in line with your top priorities and passions.

I will be talking a lot about work and life, how the two overlap and about creating the right mix that meets your personal and professional needs.  To quote one of my favourite bloggers, Penelope Trunk, we will be hanging a lot at the “intersection of work and life”.

I get incredibly inspired by helping people discover their life purpose, about helping you  find your superpower, your special uniqueness and talent that makes you, you.  And how can you use that superpower to create stimulating and challenging work in balance with the rest of your life.

How did this all come about?  Since my daughter Lucy’s birth almost four and half years ago, I had a little inkling of an idea, a little seed of inspiration, stirred up by the fuzzy knowledge that while I was happy and content at home with my daughter, one day I would again crave the stimulation and challenge of work.  So a little seed of inspiration for an inkling of an idea was planted and over the last few years I have been watering and tending to it and from this, In the Groove grew.

So in a sense, while I by no means have all the answers, I have at least walked the talk for myself.  I have learnt many valuable things and grown immensely along the way and I will be sharing this with you in future posts.  But for now, it’s lovely that you could stop by and I am looking forward to getting to know you.

Until next time…
